Chotki, also known as a Prayer Rope or Komboskini -
St. Pachomius (feast day May 9) is credited for originally using a prayer rope. Prayer ropes during that time (300A.D) had as many as 500 beads, but today are usually made with 33, 50 and 100 beads or knots. The larger beads, usually red, serve as dividers to help you keep count. The tassel was to wipe away the tears of the sinner. The tassel on these prayer beads is symbolic of that. The Jesus Prayer is usually said when meditating with a Chotki, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner."
